My Artwork consists of African-American style improvisational folk art quilts. These works are not for the faint of heart because they have high decibel hues, electric, bold colors and the unexpected or syncopated results of improvisation. The visual impact they make upon the naked eye is equal to the impact that Jazz musicians make on the ear.

For me, cloth has the ability to transform ideas and the power to seduce the
eye and the hand, whether on the body or off the body.

Large-scale portraiture, small abstract framed works. I create images in fabric and thread, dye and paint. Cloth is an unexpected medium from which to pull forth faces and study people, and this challenge appeals to me.

Vivid color, contrast, line and bold graphic design are elements that intrigue me. In my current work I employ the Navajo wedge weave technique to create tapestries with dynamic movement. The design process happens spontaneously in the weaving and gives a sense of freedom to the image.

Quilts have been the medium for many centuries and in many cultures for women to express their own artistic vision, to give their life color, to make political or social statements, and to preserve family stories. My work is energized and inspired by this rich tradition.

Involved in textiles and design from an early age, I began weaving in 1975 in New York City. Combining my rich knowledge of historical and ethnic textiles with wide technical experience in weaving and surface design, my work reflects my travels and studies as well as work in theatre costume design. After being involved in the San Francisco Art to Wear movement in the 70s and 80s, I shifted my focus to non-functional textile art. My wall pieces speak of historic textiles of many cultures, burnished with the patina of time imbued with a very personal sense of beauty and mystery.
