Artist Sarah K. Havener will discuss her passion for transforming late 1700’s to early 1800’s textiles and other antique items into useful everyday objects. Join us for a talk by the artist in the Museum gallery followed by a wine reception in the Museum store, where her work will be available for purchase. Sarah K. Havener has crafted exquisite textiles from reconstructed antique fabrics for over 50 years. Hand in hand with the study of textiles, Havener learned the custom of “makedo,” the recycling of fabrics and other items into useful everyday objects, once their original purpose was fulfilled. Such transformations include clothing items and quilts. Eventually her interest led to the re-creation of pincushions, rollups, ladies pockets, bags, and various items used in the households of an earlier time. Each piece is designed and hand sewn by the artist - all textiles date from the late 1700’s to the 1800’s. Her proven interest in textiles and hand sewing techniques qualified her as the recipient of exquisite early fabrics from the George Considine collection, the well-known Massachusetts mid-century antiques dealer. Among her other accomplishments is the inclusion of her work in the Wilton Historical Society Museum’s collection in Connecticut and the honor of being named one of 100 Craftspeople of the Year by the Early American Life Magazine in 2002. Her work has been exhibited in antique markets and craft shows throughout New England and the East Coast of the U.S. |
